Founded in 1921, Marden Russets Hockey Club has a long and illustrious history of first-rate hockey.

In the 1980s an ambitious junior programme was launched, driven by Jeremy Barham, a former England & GB international. It mushroomed into one of the largest youth hockey schemes in Kent and this pioneering work has paid dividends over many seasons since.

Marden Russets have established a reputation as a dynamic, friendly club. Moving to a new ground just outside Marden in 2017, the club has seen membership grow significantly.

Today there are 8 Men’s teams, 5 Women’s teams and some 400 juniors playing hockey across all ages.

A comprehensive team of coaches and well orchestrated training sessions ensure skills are kept sharp, with plenty of fun too.

Men's Hockey

The men’s squad is vibrant and successful with new depth added as more players join. All levels are catered for with exciting opportunities for ambitious young players and plenty of scope for older players to enjoy competitive games and real camaraderie.

The women’s squad is also seeing growth, and league-winning success. There’s a wonderful and supportive spirit that welcomes talented new players as well as more experienced players. This is a squad with a strong team ethos.

Regular sessions are run for different squads and levels across Men’s, Women’s and Juniors. These focus on fitness, skills and game practice. Men’s and women’s training is usually weekday evenings, with Juniors on Sundays.

The club can lend you a stick initially. A chat with a few members will give some useful tips on where to buy a stick of your own. You’ll need shin pads and mouth guard too. Trainers are OK to start with for tasters or training sessions but you will need astro hockey boots in due course.

Each year new players join us and quickly settle into the game, learning from team mates in an encouraging, supportive atmosphere.

Occasional Back To Hockey programmes are run, often over summer. The first step is to contact the Membership Secretary: [email protected]

Marden Hockey Club’s Young Leader programme plays an important role in the success of the junior section. The Young Leaders provide invaluable support to coaches, both on a practical level and by inspiring the youngsters to improve and enjoy their hockey.

Young Leaders benefit from a fun, rewarding and confidence building experience. The scheme helps develop key communication skills on the training pitch and is a great opportunity to fulfil Duke of Edinburgh volunteering and earn some extra money whilst adding to a CV.

Under normal circumstances our pitches can be hired by clubs, schools and registered coaching companies, subject to availability. We allow football clubs to hire the pitches for training children of primary school age and below.

Check out the Marden Russets kit on the O’Neills website. There are personalisation options and loyalty points available that you can redeem later. The club also receives a small percentage of all sales, so you’re supporting the Russets as you shop!
